First-Time Watch – Star Trek: The Next Generation Season 5, Episodes 7-9
Aaron continues his first-time journey through Star Trek in release order with three more episodes of Star Trek: The Next Generation Season 5: “Unification I,” “Unification II,” and “A Matter of Time.”
This week, Spock arrives on The Next Generation — and his appearance raises one very important question:
Why is Spock here? Why now?
Unification I / Unification II
“Unification” gives us several seemingly disparate storylines that gradually begin moving toward one another.
We talk about the way the two-part format allows the story to take its time, the advantages of television as a storytelling medium, and the difference between presenting information realistically and presenting it in the way that best serves the narrative.
Then there’s Spock.
Watching Star Trek in release order makes the timing of Leonard Nimoy’s appearance especially interesting. With Star Trek VI: The Undiscovered Country approaching, we start wondering how much of this was about connecting the television and movie sides of the franchise.

We somehow end up doing a deep dive into Matt Frewer’s IMDb profile, discovering the existence of a Dumb and Dumber television show, talking about Robin Williams nearly playing Rasmussen, and eventually getting to Foo Fighters.
We also wonder whether “A Matter of Time” benefits simply from appearing during a stretch when The Next Generation is operating at such a consistently high level.

Final Thoughts
One of the reasons for watching Star Trek in release order was to see the franchise develop as audiences originally experienced it.
“Unification” provides a great example of why that matters.
On its own, Spock appearing on The Next Generation is a major crossover. But placed within the larger release-order journey, his arrival immediately before Star Trek VI adds another layer to the experience.
It isn’t just that Spock is here.
It’s why he is here now.
And sometimes those connections between the different pieces of Star Trek are as interesting as the episodes themselves.
