First-Time Watch – Star Trek: The Next Generation Season 4, Episodes 19-21

This week, we continue our first-time, release-order journey through Star Trek with three episodes from the fourth season of The Next Generation: The Nth Degree, Qpid, and The Drumhead.

We begin with Reginald Barclay, who goes from “Broccoli” to possibly representing the next stage of human evolution after an alien probe dramatically increases his intelligence. The Nth Degree gives us another trip toward the center of the galaxy, questions about Data's intelligence, becoming one with a computer, and even a little Life 3.0 discussion. More importantly, Barclay finally gets his chance at redemption.

Then Q returns in Qpid, dropping Picard and the Enterprise crew into a Robin Hood adventure to teach Picard a lesson about love. It sounds like it should be fun—and maybe it was fun to make—but we found the story strangely forced and disjointed. We talk about what Q actually contributes to the episode, comparisons to The Princess Bride, Robin Hood versus Camelot themes, and, naturally, swearing.

Finally, The Drumhead begins with suspected sabotage and possible treason aboard the Enterprise before turning into an investigation of conspiracy, loyalty, and paranoia. It's an ambitious episode that raises some worthwhile questions, even if we aren't convinced the episode itself handles all of them successfully.

Final Thoughts

The Nth Degree gives Barclay a strong appearance and finishes with an ending we really enjoyed. Qpid brings back a character we normally look forward to seeing, but this time the pieces never quite come together for one of us. And The Drumhead gives us the most ambitious idea of the three, leading to a broader conversation about conspiracies, evidence, skepticism, and the line between asking legitimate questions and deciding on an answer before the facts are in.
